Bret Primack's 1998 interview with Marcus Miler. After a 30-year association with Columbia Records -- which had begun with 'Round About Midnight' way back in 1956 -- MILES DAVIS decided to sever ties with his old company and jump ship to Warner Bros. That was in 1986 and although a large amount of money helped facilitate his move, the iconic jazz trumpeter was in search of fresh musical inspiration. He found it in an unlikely source -- MARCUS MILLER, a 25-year-old Big Apple bass player who had first played with the 'Dark Magus' on his 1981 comeback album, 'The Man With The Horn.' As Davis discovered, Miller was much more than a mere bassist -- he was a gifted multi-instrumentalist who could write, arrange and produce (he also had a parallel career in the R&B world as Luther Vandross's collaborator). Miller came up with 'Tutu,' which with its reliance on synthesizers, drum machines and inclusion of pop elements and funky bass lines horrified many jazz critics. But it was an influential album and took Miles' music to a new generation of listeners....

Chick played a solo "Pastime Paradise" with Stevie joining in, and stayed around for the finale, "Living for the City" also featuring Paul Shaffer, ?uestlove on drums, Bobbi Humphrey on flute, Take 6, singer Yolanda Adams and Doug E. "People are often surprised to hear that this is one of the first songs I ever learned, but any beginning guitar student knows about the dreaded "F" chord; the first time you are asked to "barre" two strings together with one finger. For me, in that first week of playing the instrument, it was impossible to make my fingers do that. But by leaving the top string open and not doing the barre, you wind up with an F major seventh chord, which somehow I recognized as being the first chord of the tune I had just heard Astrud Gilberto sing with Stan Getz on TV around that time. "To me, there were always several interesting things about this piece," Metheny says of Carly Simon's first major hit (That's The Way I Always Thought It Should Be), "not the least of which is the way that she moves from root minor key to the major key just a half step above it so effortlessly in a way that is almost invisible. But also, I always just thought it was a great melody, with that big leap at the end of the first phrase. And form wise, the way it goes through this whole thing and then starts back up again to make the same build again. My take on it harmonically colors in some of what I always thought was implied in there."

This is a studio outtake of the Rory and his band jamming 'Happy Birthday' to Tom O'Driscoll, Rory's close friend and roadie, from same sessions as the new Rory Gallagher album Notes From San Francisco released June 2011 - 2CD / 2CD Limited Deluxe Edition / Digital / Digital Deluxe / Vinyl
In November 1977, after completing a 6 month world tour, Rory Gallagher and his band flew straight from their last show in Japan to San Francisco to begin working on a new album, with famed American producer Elliot Mazer (Neil Young -- 'Harvest', Janis Joplin -- 'Cheap Thrills', The Band -- 'The Last Waltz'). Mazer recalls that the sessions grew "tense", as Gallagher wasn't happy with the mixing process, describing them as "too complicated", and by the end of January 1978 he shelved the whole record and broke up his band of the past 5 years.
Fast forward to 2010 and Rory's brother and manager, Dбnal, allowed his son & Rory's nephew, Daniel, to recover the album from the Gallagher archive and begin the process of mixing it with his engineer. Rory said in 1992 he hoped the album would surface one day but only if it were remixed and now we finally get to hear this never before issued studio album from a key period of Gallagher's career, an album that would have been released between 'Calling Card' and 'Photo Finish'. This is truly a 'Holy Grail' release for Rory's fans.

CD 2 is also another fabulous discovery, a blistering live album taken from four nights at The Old Waldorf, San Francisco December 1979. In the audience Van Morrison, on stage Rory Gallagher (guitar/vocals), Gerry McAvoy (bass) and Ted McKenna (drums).
Daniel Gallagher chose to add the live side to highlight why Rory chose to shelve the studio album and reduce his band back down to a three piece. As Rory often said he wanted to get back to 'meat and potatoes rock & roll'. Rory's desire to get back to the stripped back, three piece line up of his earlier solo and Taste work may in part be down to his attendance at the infamous Sex Pistols show at The Winterland Ballroom. While mixing the studio record in January 1978, Rory Gallagher went along to the show and was completely blown away by the Pistols energy and fury, he described it ''As close to Eddie Cochran as you're going to get.''
Incidentally, the album's sleeve image is an original postcard Rory Gallagher posted to his mother while on tour. Gallagher would always send postcards back home to Ireland from wherever he was in the world. The Limited Edition Deluxe Edition of 'Notes From San Francisco' will include a set of personalised Rory postcards complete with 'Rory Stamps' which have been sourced from the original US company that produced them. Also included are reproductions of Rory's hand written lyrics which were kept by Elliot Mazer.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
London-born, he has lived at various points on three continents and experienced at firsthand Nigerian drums and folk, European Pop and American R&B. His own performance experience includes Theatre, Gospel, Rock, Pop, Contemporary Christian, R&B, Soul and the Blues. That all these find a home in his repertoire is a testament to contemporary jazz and Eghobamien's passion in embracing diverse influences.
Eghobamien studied Jazz Vocal Performance and Creative Writing at university in New York and trained as a classical baritone. Though a vocalist, he draws constant inspiration from many influences: Nina Simone, Cassandra Wilson, Nat King Cole, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Fela Kuti and Babatunde Olatunji.
His debut album, 'Poured Gently', combines fresh and unusual arrangements of jazz and pop standards from Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, George and Ira Gershwin, Stevie Wonder and Bon Jovi with haunting and melodic original compositions and thoughtful lyrics.

You'll hear lines that lead the changes, repeated and imitated phrases, and a few examples of melodic minor when the rhythm part uses that half-step slide into the IV chord (see the previous clip for details). You'll also catch chromatic phrases, big slides, pedal tones, and a few different ways to incorporate chromatics and dynamics.
Use the notation and follow me through this blues improvisation. Then grab your guitar, and play over the rhythm track to explore and apply the principles yourself. Have fun on this one!

Please excuse the jittery picture, my PC doesn't seem to like editing this Ella footage for some reason. However, this is the opening track from an Ella concert in Italy in 1970. As far as I'm aware this footage isn't available elsewhere on youtube - I certainly can't find it. The First Lady Of Song is in great voice here - to think she was without a permanent recording contract at this point is just plain bizarre! Anyway, enjoy this rare Ella material.

In 1979 America (Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley) were at the height of their popularity and had just released "Silent Letter" their first album as a duo following the departure of fellow founder member Dan Peek. Acclaimed Australian film maker Peter Clifton captured the band at their concert in New York's Central Park and then followed them across to California where he filmed them in the studio and on location. All of this footage was combined to make America "Live At Central Park".

Lynyrd Skynyrd are the ultimate Southern Rock band. Their signature three guitar attack coupled to superb songwriting and massive on stage charisma has rightfully earned them a reputation as one of the greatest live bands of all time. The original band infamously had their career cut short by a disastrous plane crash in 1977 which took the lives of three members plus two of their road crew and seriously injured several others. In 1987 the surviving members reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant taking the place of his brother Ronnie. This concert from 1996 captures the band on top form at Rockpalast's Loreley Festival on 23 June 1996.

Probably Sammy Davis, Jr.'s last TV performance. He died of lung cancer about a year later. At the end, he tells Paul Shaffer "No rehearsal. See--better!" This explains the very light touch by the band until the tempo changes--they've never played with this man before, and he's a legend among legends! But when they hit the groove, they all swing. All in all, a very tasty performance. (Imagine being able to just walk onto live TV and pull this off effortlessly! It's mind-boggling....) Sammy's one of my heroes, and while his shtick was sometimes hard to take, there's no debating his prodigious talent, even in that last year of his life.
